Resilience, Kindness and Happiness

A perspective reset! This type of thing belongs in more newscasts on major news networks! That would contribute to a culture of kindness...wow!

Having a soft heart in a cruel world is courage, nor weakness. #quotes
What if...

ü  What if we all lived like this?
ü  What if we saw the big picture this clearly?
ü  What would our school cultures be like if this were normal?

As I was going through the above video and the next one, I couldn’t help but wonder about what makes people do these things? In these actions lies a beauty that is so deep it almost makes me cry (and that’s not something I do that easily)!

Happiness begins where selfishness ends
John Wooden
Obviously there’s a place for competition. Competition is built into the human experience just as kindness is. These cases, though, show an override, a bigger picture, a grasp on what is ultimately important. What amazes me is the happiness showing on the faces of the people involved. These acts of kindness zapped everyone with a joy and happiness which does not often present itself. Wow!

Kindness and happiness thread their way through the human story and wherever they do, we rejoice in the beauty they create.

I love quotes! They set the tone for the classroom if adequately used. The book Quantum Teaching stresses setting a mood in the classroom through many things including posters. Quotes that promote happiness through selflessness and kindness fit into this idea.

Now add to the discussion resilience. What is it? It's the ability to bounce back from adversity and trouble. Resilient people don't stand alone, according to the Mayo Clinic. They rely on the other people to support them. They are involved and people are appropriately involved in their lives and what is going on in their lives.

How does this look in my classroom? That is the question which is hauntingly important. It means I take time to listen and to learn from my students. It means I take time to be kind.

I will:

  • listen carefully
  • reflect on what they say
  • be a kind emotions detective
  • see past their words into what they are really saying
  • give them room to be themselves
  • love them where they're at
  • realize I have a lot to learn
My students will benefit from kindness by how it makes them feel and hopefully what it makes them do. I would hope that they follow examples of kindness.

Kindness and happiness intersect. They are mutual friends; I'd venture to say they are mutually exclusive. Kindness brings happiness. Happiness brings kindness.
